Making time for daily self-care practices is critical to your health and energy.
Does this sound familiar? You’ve already hit the doze button twice and you’re still not moving. Your cell phone is buzzing, and you’re sure to open it up to a wave of text messages, emails and social media feeds to scroll past and answer. And all you really want to do is nestle deeper into your pillow.
Is this how your day sometimes starts?
I know this drill. And what I would love to do is give you a hug. I get it, I really do. But first, I’m going to embrace you with a couple ideas about self-care and rituals.
I know, you’re thinking, ‘Why do I need to know this? Where’s my hug?’ Well, the reason is because I want you to love you, and I believe loving yourself begins with self-care. Taking time for self-care practices every day is critical not only for self-love, but to protect and promote your well-being. You can change your health. You can change your life. And you can give yourself a hug.
In fact, science proves it. Epigenetics, the study of biological mechanisms that will switch genes on and off, tells us that our genes are not fixed, but fluid. Food, habits, thoughts, quality of relationships and self-care routines all impact our genes, both positively and negatively.
We all have daily routines, but sometimes we aren’t so purposeful about them. Self-care involves developing everyday practices you find nurturing and sustaining. And, that’s the key: being purposeful about approaching your day, your health, your world. When you practice personal rituals in a conscious fashion, you learn to embrace self-care. And embrace yourself, too.
But just in case that isn’t enough, let’s further unpack the benefits to self-care rituals:
- You will feel better about yourself
- You will have more energy
- You will attain greater focus
- You will become more mindful
- You will perform at a higher level
That sounds pretty great, doesn’t it?
In future posts, we’re going to talk about the best rituals for morning, afternoon and evening, though right now, I want to share the types of daily rituals you can start anytime today:
Be silent each day. Pick a moment and just BE.
Practice gratitude. Write down 10 things you’re grateful for every single day. Maybe do it with your morning coffee (after you’ve let go of that pillow).
Actively commune with nature. Walk in the park, smell a flower, observe birds and bees, pick fruit, bask in the sun, garden, watch a sunset, listen to the ocean, sit by a river stream gaze at the stars (and beyond) and witness divinity in every living thing.
Meditate with intention. Our bodies, reduced to essential states, are localized bundles of energy and information in a universe of energy and information.
Exercise creativity. Art is great for the meditative state, but also for healing. When you create art, you have an audience all around you on an angelic level. Making something beautiful, useful or therapeutic (or all three) is a divine act.
Let’s get back to your morning cup of coffee or tea. It can become part of this. Leave your bed and your cell phone behind. Take a moment to sit with your drink. Sip. Sit. Look out the window. And be mindful as you prepare for the day.
I get it. It can be hard to be simple. I get what a challenge the day can be. How hard embracing self-care can feel. The challenge of loving yourself when you’re just not feeling it.
